Dentures & Treatment Options For Missing Teeth
Our goal at Klahanie Family Dentistry is to help you preserve natural teeth as long as possible. We always remind our patients that teeth can last a lifetime with good oral hygiene and regular visits to our office.
However, we understand that nobody is perfect and that sometimes people tend to neglect nighttime brushing or skip dental appointments. Eventually, if this happens too often, a tooth will be affected by decay and need to be removed. Tooth loss has many consequences, so it’s always advisable to replace the missing tooth or teeth as soon as possible to prevent further inconveniences.
One possible alternative is removable dental prosthetics attached to implants- a partial or a full denture. Dr. Howey can explain all the different teeth replacement options and ask you about your expectations to determine which one is the most suitable for you.

Dentures
Dentures are a set of artificial teeth that is custom-made in a dental lab to fit your mouth perfectly. They fit snugly over the gum tissue where teeth used to be, so they basically replace the missing natural teeth.
Apart from the obvious aesthetic benefit, dentures help patients with multiple missing teeth to eat and talk better. They can be easily removed for cleaning, keeping both the denture and the gum tissue free of bacteria and rests of food.
There are different types of dentures, depending on the patient’s need. The most common ones are:
Full Dentures
A full or complete denture is an acrylic removable dental prosthesis that replaces all upper or lower teeth. It is suitable for patients missing all teeth in a dental arch. Full dentures cover all the gum tissue where teeth used to be, and the upper one also has an acrylic plate that covers the roof of the mouth. These dentures sit snugly on the gums or are held in place by dental adhesive. They are not the most comfortable option (they don’t have the best retention), but can be secured with implants.
What are partial dentures?
Partial dentures are a removable prosthetic device that replaces one or more missing teeth. They snap into place between the existing teeth, filling the black gap where natural teeth used to be.
Partial dentures use the remaining teeth and implants for support and retention. However, unlike dental implants, partial dentures retained by implants can be removed at night.

Full dentures that snap on to implants
2, 4 or more dental implants can be used to secure a denture.
Implant-supported dentures are the best of both worlds. These dentures are still removable (perfectly hygienic), but they also have excellent retention as they snap onto implants surgically screwed into the jawbone.
In addition to the comfort of eating without worrying about your fake teeth, snap-in dentures also have other long-term benefits. They help preserve the structure of the jawbone, which prevents the normal deterioration that happens over time.
